What to look for on a wine label

French labels rarely name the grape and often name the place. A few keywords tell you what is actually in the bottle.

Place before grape

On a French label the largest type is usually the appellation — the place. The grape often is not mentioned at all.

That is not mystery-making but logic: the appellation already decides which grapes may be grown there.

Remember the producer

Within one appellation, producers differ enormously. If a bottle worked for you, look for that name again — not just the same region.
